What should we think about when we blow the shofar?
Menorat HaMaor: “And to hint for the three principles of the repentance, the Torah commands to blow the Shofar [Litkoa, in Hebrew], to blast the Shofar [Leharia, in Hebrew] and to blow the shofar [Litkoa, in Hebrew].
The first blow, is to imply the first condition, that a man of repentance [Ba’al Teshuvah] should think over and inspect his deeds, and then to abandoned his sins completely, if he has evil [sin] in his hand or in his heart and thoughts, he shell remove it, as it is written: “Let the wicked give up his ways, The sinful man his plans; Let him turn back to the LORD, And He will pardon him; [To our God, For He freely forgives.]” (Isaiah 55:7).
The second – to blast the Shofar [Terua] is to sigh and howl [in his heart] because of his sins that have befallen him, and to regret his evil deeds, as it is written: “Now that I have turned back, I am filled with remorse; Now that I am made aware, I strike my thigh, I am ashamed and humiliated, For I bear the disgrace of my youth.” (Jeremiah 31:19).
And the third, to blow the Shofar, is to accept in his heart and to decide that he will no longer return to his first evil thoughts and deeds, as it is written: “Nor ever again will we call our handiwork our god,” (Hosea 14:4).”
